Intimate Topography

The distinction between erotica and pornography might be understood as a matter of magnification. Erotica tends to focus on the large scale aspects of sexuality: the emotional state of the lovers, for example, and the narrative arc leading to their union. By contrast, pornography tends to zoom in on the detailed mechanics of intercourse, often presenting its subjects as disembodied sexual organs, rather than complex human beings. This project represents the logical conclusion of such a narrowing of focus; here, the body is presented at extremely high magnification, so that familiar pornographic subjects become fully disembodied and abstract.
